Father. Mother. Friend
You’re everywhere
Your loving presence
is the loving essence
of all that is
It is
the air we breathe
the rock beneath our feet
the ground of being
and breath of life
That’s how it is with you
Rock and air and air and rock
Both,
and at the same time
Hallowed be your name
(How can it be anything but?)
When we dwell upon your presence,
your loving essence
Both,
and at the same time
Father. Mother. Friend
We look at you, then at our world
and there’s a disconnect
Who you are, and all that is,
don’t always quite line up
So we pray
May more of what you want
Be done
May more of who you are
Become
May work and play and love and rest
in lives across the world
and lives across our street
be more and more infused with you
(And yes we know you’ll choose our help with that)
A day stretches ahead
the story to be written
Give us all we need
sustain us through it
body, soul and spirit
Father. Mother. Friend
We’ll wander off the path today
The good path, the best path,
the one that brings our thriving
We may get hurt. We may hurt others
but you will call us back
Over and over and
over and over
Seventy times seven
And then some more
And others will hurt us,
and use us and wrong us
But you call us not to stray
Into the withering drought of unforgiveness
Where hearts can die and souls can shrink
We’ll need your help with that
(And it’s always there on tap)
You know that wrong
can often look so right
Give us the strength to make
the wise choices
Guide our steps from foolish ones
When all is said and done
we come back to the start
That you just are
We don’t need to be afraid
Nothing is above you
We don’t need to be afraid
Nothing is beyond you
We don’t need to be afraid
Nothing was before you
If we dig to the core of the universe,
its body, soul and spirit
we find you
And you are love
And that’s how it always was
And that’s how it always will be
Amen
