Spring

Blazing April sun
burst onto the scene this week.
It made quite the entrance:
sudden, unexpected,
unapologetic,
and late.

There was no ‘I’m sorry,
I got held up.’
Just a headlong rush
into winter’s bubble.
Which burst. And not a moment
too soon.

The subsequent explosion
scattered office workers,
across business park lawns,
with skin exposed,
pasty from
months of imprisonment.

Their smiles at one another
were like those of shipwrecked souls
who had finally
discovered land and fresh water.

Scarcely believing it could last
they gulped it down,
terrified that with some careless flick
of some celestial switch
it might all be lost once more.
