extinguished candle

Easter Saturday

Silence.

The world is on pause
Bees freeze in flight
And the wren has stopped her song
Mighty trees instruct their leaves
To stillness.

He is gone.
Who promised Truth
And now who lies
Entombed.
Despair this day
For God…?
God is dead.

Hope itself is wrapped
In those grave clothes.
A promise not kept
A light put out
A life now dead in stone.

So much expected
Kingdom come
Sight for the blind
Freedom for captives
Good news for the poor
And an end, an end
To oppression
Messiah?

A somebody, we thought
But look, now look
Just another body
Religious zeal and Roman nails
Pierce every wondrous dream
A nobody now. Cold.

And silent.
